I am a rising 2nd year Developmental and Stem Cell Biology student at the Pollen lab and am interested in brain evolution and development, trying to understand what make human a "Human". My commitment to ASGD revolves around bringing a voice to the table about diversity being an international and a first generation student myself. I believe that every graduate student carves their own path through grad school and each path is a story worth hearing.

Esperanza Padilla

Esperanza Padilla

I am a first-generation college graduate and granddaughter of migrant farm workers from Mexico. My experience with receiving a late diagnosis of autism and ADHD in my adulthood influenced my interest in social science research around neurodiversity and disability. My research draws on medical sociology and critical disability studies to understand how experiences of disabilities and diagnoses, specifically relating to neurodivergence, are shaped by axes of power and oppression. Currently, my dissertation research focuses on how neurodivergent people (e.g., self-identified autistic or ADHD) are leveraging online spaces to collectively construct alternative narratives, scripts, and shared cultures about neurodivergence. Previously, I earned my bachelor’s degree in sociology at UC Berkeley and was a student of the California community college education system.
